On March 18th, 2015, Sunrise House Prevention Youth Council attended the Planning Commission Meeting to call attention to the “Conditional Use Permit 2014-025” which requests a license that would allow Walgreen’s located on 1532 North Main Street in the Commercial Retail Center of Harden Ranch Plaza to sell alcohol. In the meeting many people spoke as to why this license should be put in place. One of the main reasons for approving this license was producing more sales which meant more profits towards the store, Matt Nohr, District 3, commented that this license might help create jobs. On the other hand, Shawn Bakker, District 5, commented that many stores in the surrounding areas already have liquor licenses¬† and how the city is working towards cleaning up Salinas and these licenses would be the start to promote healthy living and stopping violence. The out come of the meeting was 5/2 vote denying Walgreen’s request for the license. In the near future Walgreen’s could appeal this decision and a new vote will be taken to City Council.
